Robert W. Johnson Alphawave Research, Atlanta, GA 30238, USA (Dated: December 26, 2009) Abstract To investigate the relation between observations of the 10.7 cm flux and the international sunspot number so that a physical unit may be ascribed to historical records, both polynomial and power law models are developed giving the sunspot number as a function of flux and vice versa. Maximum likelihood is used to estimate the parameters, and Bayesian model selection to discriminate between them. The power law giving flux as a function of sunspot number is found to be the most plausible model and may be used to estimate the radio flux from historical sunspot observations.

Prediction of Solar Activity with a Neural Network and Its Efeect on Orbit Prediction

BACKGROUND The variability of solar activity over time demonstrates highly complex behavior. Observations of solar activity as evidenced by the number of sunspots have been performed throughout history. 1 Regular observations have been recorded since 1610, shortly after the invention of the telescope; however, only observations made since about 1850 are considered highly reliable. In 1855, an i...

The dependence of the magnetic field strength of a sunspot umbra on its intensity and brightness temperature

A partial decrease of the convective energy by the magnetic field of a sunspot causes the temperature of the magnetized plasma to decrease and this leads to a magneto-hydrostatic equilibrium. Thus, we expect a strong relation between magnetic field strength of a sunspot and its temperature/brightness. Here, we investigate this relation in the umbra of the large sunspot in NOAA10930 using spectr...

A robust correlation between growth rate and amplitude of solar cycles: consequences for prediction methods

We consider the statistical relationship between the growth rate of activity in the early phase of a solar cycle with its subsequent amplitude on the basis of four datasets of global activity indices (Wolf sunspot number, group sunspot number, sunspot area, and 10.7-cm radio flux). In all cases, a significant correlation is found: stronger cycles tend to rise faster. Owing to the overlapping of...

Characteristics of MHD Oscillations Observed with MDI

We report on the spatial distribution of magnetogram oscillatory power and phase angles between velocity and magnetogram signals as observed with the Michelson Doppler Imager. The dataset is 151.25′′× 151.25′′ containing sunspot from Dec 2, 1997 with a temporal sampling interval of 60 seconds and spatial sampling of 0.605′′. Simultaneously observed continuum intensity and surface velocity accom...
